About the Program
The Humanities Program does not directly lead to a degree or certificate of completion; however, the subject matter within it can prove vital and essential to other degrees. Philosophy, History, Music, the Arts, and unique skillsets such as jewelry making are all inclusions under the program's umbrella.ARTS 1810 G01 3 JEWELRY & SMALL METAL CONSTONSTRUCTION I 3 - Credits
This course introduces the basic techniques, materials, and tools traditionally used in the creation of jewelry and/or small-scale sculptural objects.

ARTS 2996 G01 3 JEWELRY & SMALL METAL CONSTRUCTION II 3 - Credits
This course is a continuation of the basic techniques, materials, and tools traditionally used in the creation of jewelry and/or small-scale sculptural objects.


ARTS 1610 G01 DRAWING I - 3 credits
This course introduces the basic principles, materials, and skills of observational drawing. Emphasis is placed on rendering a 3-D subject on a 2-D surface with visual accuracy. Other topics include historical and contemporary references as well as an investigation of linear perspective, line, value, shape, space & composition. May be repeated up to 3 credits

ARTS 1630 G01 3 PAINTING I 3 - Credits
This course introduces the tradition of painting as a medium for artistic expression. Students will investigate materials, tools, techniques, history and concepts of painting. Emphasis is placed on developing descriptive and perceptual skills, color theory, and composition. May be repeated up to 3 credits.
Assistant Professor Paul Kemp
Originally from Colorado, Paul Kemp joined the faculty at NMSU Grants in 2024. He formerly taught at the Colorado School of Mines and the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver (where he received a PhD in 2023). He also holds degrees in Political Science from the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado State University. As an undergraduate, Paul had the good fortune to study abroad in Murcia, Spain – a formative experience for his love of history and foreign cultures. Later, he enjoyed several years traveling throughout the United States as a drummer in a touring band. In his free time, Paul can often be found reading history, exploring the mountains around Grants, or relaxing at home with his wife and twin daughters.
