Writing Center

The NMSU Grants Writing Center offers one-on-one tutoring to students and members of the community.  Tutors work with all types of writing projects.    In addition, they can help at any stage of the drafting process, from brainstorming a paper topic to polishing the final product.  Consultations are available in person and online.  The Writing Center also conducts workshops on writing-related topics.

In addition, the Writing Center provides faculty support.  Instructors can refer students to the Writing Center.  Faculty members are also encouraged to bring classes for tours.  The Writing Center offers embedded tutoring as well; tutors can visit classes if instructors need writing assistance.

The NMSU Grants Writing Center is learner-centered.  Tutors do not just line edit people’s work.  Instead, they encourage students to reflect on their writing.  When people are actively involved in the revision process, they hone not only their writing but also their thinking.  They can then apply these skills in the classroom and beyond.  This doesn’t mean that the Writing Center doesn’t work on grammar and punctuation issues; staff just does so in a way that encourages active engagement.
