On Saturday, January 21, the Soroptimist Club International of Gallup presented NMSU Grants graduate Alisha Broten with a $1000 scholarship to enable her to continue her studies at NMSU toward an undergraduate degree in elementary education. Broten completed her associate’s degree in 2016. Broten was honored before over 50 Soroptimist members at a luncheon at El Rancho Restaurant. In her acceptance remarks, Broten told the club members that she was motivated to go into elementary education by a fourth grade teacher who inspired her academic self-confidence. Alisha offered an emotional account of how teachers do not always encourage young students and how a teacher can make a vast difference in a young person’s life by supporting positive achievements. In awarding the scholarship to Broten, the selection committee noted her high grade point average and her work with young students at the NMSU Grants Students Success Center and with the past two summer NASNTI high school academies.
